This is, to date, the most perfect book I have ever read. Markham has a fascinating story, one that stands on its own, that doesn't require exclamations, sensationalism, and hyperbole. I almost didn't want the book to end, and slowed down to savor it as a meditation on adventure.

Though it's written about early 20th Century British Africa, horse racing, and piloting, it is accessible and tangible thanks to numerous artful similes and metaphors. I found so many phrases perfect that I couldn't keep up with writing them down, and am seriously considering a re-read soon just to record them, as well as the many wise observations that are deeper than a retelling of encounters with elephants, lions, and insects, and the human relationship with dogs, horses, and planes.
