Engrossing and thought provoking at first, I think after reading through scores of strong essays about "The American Idea", I just lost interest. Strong writing, but perhaps you have to be highly patriotic to thoroughly enjoy?

Tiffoknee the 3rd Conner I own this book. I'll admit I'm quite excited to read it. I consider myself to be highly patriotic, but not in the neo-conservative, blinding sense of the term. I'm more interested in our potential as a nation, and therein I find myself patriotic and expectant. Plus, I enjoy The Atlantic Monthly.

César My wife got me into reading The Atlantic a few years ago. It's a great read, and I wouldn't take my two stars for content but just, well, it's a hefty book about the same thing. Perhaps, it's an anthology I'll return to later.

Tiffoknee the 3rd Conner To some extent I agree. I could see myself picking and choosing in terms of what essays I read. The essay about the Flight of EgyptAir is creepy as all get-out. But a nice piece of reportage.
