For a book that is aimed at children ages 8 to 12, there are some pretty heady concepts regarding time travel and fate in The Magic Half...but all presented in a very kid-friendly way. My favorite quote: "Maybe there isn't one thing that *has* to happen. Maybe there are a bunch of different possibilities for every minute. . . . Maybe time is like being in a hallway with four doors; if you open the one on the right, you'll end up in another hall with four more doors. But if you chose the door on the left, you'd end up somewhere else entirely. So what happens changes all the time, depending on what people choose." This is quite a complex concept for a child to think about, but definitely one worth pondering. The Magic Half gives children that opportunity in the context of a fun and exciting book about friendship, time travel, thievery, fate, and magic.
