Reading Waterland was like a breath of fresh air after attempting to read 100 Years of Solitude. The story is narrated by a history teacher, Henry Crick, who tells the story of East Anglia history, while showing that we (well, actually he) is wrapped up in that history. Crick has a student that is so overwhelmed with the possibility of nuclear war (this is the 1980′s), that Crick cannot convince him that the past is important. Through a series of personal stories, Crick manages to show the student, and the reader, that past actions determine the present.

There’s lot of food for thought in Waterland and the writing is superb.
