it was amazing
bookshelves: youth, young-adult, autobiography
Recommended for: 7th grade and up

While the story is written by Jimenez as an adult, he writes from the perspective of his teenage self. The language is simple enough to be understood my middle school students and each chapter flows well into the next. While sometimes a whole season will pass from one chapter to the next, the connection is not lost. The growth of Frankie is natural and does not rely on melodramatics to force change. Knowing that English is Jimenez’s second language makes the writing even more impressive.
