I like Meg Cabot. Really, I do. Her Princess Diaries books are a huge guilty pleasure for me. Always. And I was ready to love Heather Wells in the same way. I was really into the huge "love your body!" theme that ran throughout, the writing was cute and sparky and some of the secondary characters were interesting. Cooper and Heather suffered from being too much like Mia and Michael (Princess Diaries reference), and just about any other will-they-won't-they in the history of chicklit. We have to listen to pages and pages of Heather switching between having fantasies about Cooper and then telling the reader that there's no way he would find her attractive because she's not smart/thin/pretty/educated/rich enough. Cooper himself wasn't that likeable. The only true shock in the book for me was that Cooper and Heather didn't exactly wind up together. That being said, Heather was, for the most part, a likeable character. I especially loved her little daydreams about her potential majors and the lives that could materialise from them.

The mystery was at first enjoyable but it suffered from being really quite predictable and becoming more so as the story went along. In my opinion there should have been more red herrings and dead ends and less Cooper/Heather will-they-won't-they. Jordan and Heather also weren't interesting because it didn't really go anywhere - Heather alternates between fantasising about him, remembering all the awful stuff he did to her and fending off his advances. Jordan might have been a sleaze but I found a little unbelievable from Heather that she'd still believe herself to be massively unattractive after Jordan wanted her back. The motive was also fairly by-the-numbers, although I didn't predict it. Nothing shocking, particularly good or surprising here, but a quick fun read if you like Meg Cabot. However, I'm not sure I'll be checking out the other books in the Heather Wells series anytime soon.
