did not like it
bookshelves: abandoned
Read in January, 2011

I'm still in shock, I've had to abandon an Anita Shreve when I was more than half way through! It was actually a surreal experience because whilst reading the book I kept checking the cover to see if it was by my favourite female author. No descriptions of place so that I had no idea at all of what it was like (except in a slightly negative fashion) where the main characters lived. The style was completely different - short very simplified sentences which gave a sort of dumbed down effect but my biggest problem was the mother of the piece. (No spoiler here as this is all quite obvious from the first 20 pages.) She just doesn't have one redeeming feature - no sense of humour, no quirky way of looking at things, intelligence, (god forbid) or even a fighting spirit. Nothing - except she needs rescuing and that definitely wasn't enough for this reader (again mentioned in the dustjacket) to want to stick around for when she comes back into the story. I actually didn't want her to come back at all! I just couldn't accept the fact that the main nice character had fallen in love with someone like her - beauty and nothing else. It might work in a Mills and Boons but not anywhere else!! I'm desperately in need of some feedback from some of my goodread friends about this.
