Charles Baxter can write. An eclectic cast of characters can really annoy you, sometimes, but as he portrayed them as real rather than zany, I managed to care about each one (except for Madame Maggaroulian, as I must admit that I will never be able to take a psychic seriously).

He tied up the appropriate loose ends and left all the right ones dangling. Did any of you ever see Singles? It's not a great movie, but it has always stuck with me for one reason. It ended all tidy, and if you turned off the TV at the start of the credits, you could walk away feeling like love could concur all. If you let them roll, however, while you visited with your friends (a super-couple that let you tag along sometimes) you'd eventually see the bonus scene. It's months later, and the couple has broken up. You felt jipped. You wished that you'd turned off the TV before having reality thrust on you.

128745 I'm so happy you liked it! I have a collection of his short stories you can borrow. I'm not so enamored of it as I was with this book. Did you know we missed hearing him when he was in Portland - oops.
And now, I can't wait to hear what you think of "A Boy's Life." I saw it at your house again the other day and I think you'll really like it.
