I've reread this book several times over the forty years I've owned it (in three different editions). Despite its curious (to our minds) 1890's journalistic style, the book remains the most complete and detailed narrative of the Homestead strike. Contemporary historians like Kraus and Woolf have done more coherent analyses, but Burgoyne's account has the rawness and intimacy of a witness's perspective.

If you want to experience the unfolding horror of this terrible time in American history, read this book.
