Enterprise's review of Amsterdam
Amsterdam by Ian McEwan
This is a strange book to review. I liked it -- else I wouldn't have given it four stars. It was a quick read, a fun read. I think it has serious resolution problems -- the ending just doesn't seem to follow from the rest of the book, although it's all carefully prepared, and it just seemed absurd. It's a strength of the book, I think, that it survives with a positive review despite that.
McEwan is very careful to lay in the connection with Hamlet through structure and allusions in the writing, but I'm not sure in how far the realization of this connection is relevant to the reading of the novel.
