When I pick up a Scandinavian detective novel, I expect some black, depressing, soul-crushing tale of banal evil. In this book, we get a wine-sipping, gourmet-cooking jet-setting yuppie whippersnapper with a beautiful, pregnant medical doctor girlfriend. Come on, this is not the kind of guy who pursues murderers in Scandinavia, or probably anywhere else.
The sun/shadow metaphor is belabored. I think this is the first and last Erik Winter mystery I'll read. Call it the Winter of my discontent.
