Enterprise's review of The Glorious Cause: The American Revolution, 1763-1789
The Glorious Cause: The American Revolution, 1763-1789 (Oxford History of the United States) by Robert Middlekauff
A good general overview, as expected of the Oxford History of the United States series, but in some particulars, not so brillant. It is fairly poorly annotated, making one wonder, occasionally, where a particular piece of information comes from. It is not well subdivided -- subchapters get Roman numerals, but unfortunately no titles, leading one to struggle through the chapters to find the information one needs. It is a dry read up to the start of the actual war, and confusing to boot, but that's largely owing to the confused nature of events; and it gets much better during the war and the aftermath. It gets great kudos for being an actual history of the Revolution up to its conclusion with the U.S. Constitution's adoption.
