Keith's review of Out of the Silent Planet
Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis
This is a second-generation space story that, as the author mentions, owes a great deal to H.G. Wells. It's also part of that coming-face-to-face-with-an-alien-culture-and-thereby-learning-more-about-your-own-type story with a heap of rather unsubtle Christian allegory thrown in (this is CSL, after all). The characterization was lacking - to be honest, I thought Dr. Ransom was kind of a dud - but the prose was muscular and the plot (and chapter-ending cliffhangers) kept my interest. I didn't love it, and I thought one of its chief virtues was its brevity, but I'll probably get around to reading the next one. (This is the first volume in the "celebrated" Space Trilogy.)
