This story is set in 1941 as the Russians and Germans are trying to weather the snow and perpetual night of the Russian winter. The soldiers from both sides hide out with a peasant family as they try to fend off the vampires.

There is lots of blood and gore, but the story line is pretty compelling and I like the bit from the book description:

"No matter how hard humanity tries to kill itself, something else does it better."
