I read this around age 11 or 12, it was recommended by my doctor when she heard that I had liked reading The Hobbit. It had taken me around a year to get to it, but when I did I was fascinated -- it was mythic, sweeping, moving, funny, had good (if rather stereotypical fantasy) characters, used descriptive language that really made me feel I could see the people and places in it.
