This debut novel is quite remarkable. The reader understands Matie, the oldest of four motherles girls, by the second page. Mattie chooses a "word of the day," and plays a word game with her best friend, Weaver, every day. It's 1906 and this talented writer wants nothing more than a chance to enroll in college. But her family is poor, so she's expected to stay home to raise her sisters, and there's a handsome boy wanting to chase her down the aisle, BUT...

Why does Royal really want to marry her? What is her school teachers's stunning and motivating secret? And why was that woman found drowned at the summer inn's lake with no male companion (with whom she came to the inn) to be found? This novel is non-stop adventure and inspiration. Mattie's courage and fire to follow her dreams is illustrated beautifully.
