I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak
I had just finished "The Book Thief," just discovered Marcus Zusak when a friend gave me a library book of "I Am The Messenger." It took me a while to read it because I just KNEW I wouldn't like the book. It seemed so... inconsequential compared to the poetic bliss of "The Book Thief." It failed the flip test miserably... I couldn't see any great metaphors, the writing style seemed simple... and the first few pages dealt with a group of 19 year old losers and I felt way too old to care...
so I forced my eyeballs to take in about twenty pages and after at first, I just KNEW that the plot was stupid, that I was going to hate it... but then I began to look forward to the scenes with the 17 year old dog. The dog scenes got better and better... I began to care about the losers... and the plot began to intrigue me. This is Zusak's genius. He could write an entire novel with only the letters available to him in a Scrabble board game... and the only cha...more
