In Lucky, Sebold recounted the horrifying events of how she, a freshman at Syracuse University, was beaten and raped in a park in Syracuse, New York. Having struggled to find calm within a turbulent and often mysterious family life, she returned to Syracuse University
and later identified her assailant. Thereafter Sebold led the reader along a path
on which she was a victor in the courtroom-but the path took a wicked u-turn
and Sebold was immersed in another rape that she could not triumph over in any
