This had some good points, but I didn't really think it deserved the Newbery. It seemed more like a pretty good first novel. The story was told in Abilene's voice, but the language she used seemed unlikely for someone of her age and background. And I was bothered by the repeated use of the expression "knickers in a knot," which I'm pretty sure is Australian and would not have been used in Kansas during the Depression. In addition, many of the other characters seemed a little flat and stereotypical and the plot did not convince me.
