The story of Rose, a habitual abandoner, who finds herself in a home for unwed mothers in the 1960s. The story is about the place almost as much as the people--a place where people come for a brief, but life-altering, time and then move on. It is also the story of the people who stay there--Rose, with all her secrets, her daughter, the nuns and the groundskeeper. I loved the story of the place and I thought the writing was quite good. It held my interest and there were a few really lovely moments where a theme would repeat itself through time and generations, recalling other beautiful moments. I think, however, that I would have enjoyed the book a lot more if it was not for the main character whom I just didn't like. I didn't understand her at all. She seems to act with no motivation or thought. I didn't understand why she did things, and I don't think she did either, but the author seems entirely sympathetic to her, which frustrated me. I loved all the other characters, but Rose, on whom everything hinges, annoyed me.

Sheila Dreckman The main character is why I liked this book because I felt she sacrificed herself staying until her child was grown and cared for. I think we don't really know what a person gives up for those we love and how hard it is sometimes.

Janelle I also felt like I had missed something. And I have to disagree with Sheila. Rose always did exactly what she wanted without much of a thought for anyone else. She was never really there for her child while she was growing up. So what was she really sacrificing? The only time Rose ever seemed to know what she was doing was when she was cooking. I think she stayed only for herself, because it was the only thing that seemed right at the time.

Mitchell I agree w/ Chelsea'a view of Rose, she seemed, to me, slefless, but Ann portrayed here a endearing. (?).

Katie Isn't that kind of what makes Rose real, that her motivations aren't easy to pin-down? I think 90% of the time I don't have a clue why I have done the things I have done. Anyway, Rose did say that she felt like she was doing the right thing with Cecilia, because she saw that there were so many people willing and wanting to mother her.

Tina Why did Rose leave Thomas in the first place?
It doesn't seem like she bettered her life in any way. I do not see what was so great about her...

Patrick Rose is certainly an enigma. It almost seemed like she had some sort of Autism thinking of only practical things and the here and now but she felt abstract sympathy for people she left. It is almost as if she was the NRA with their abstract sympathy for the Newtowne victims.
