This is an engrossing chronicle of three women on welfare that also manages to cover municipal and state bureaucracy and privatization, our haphazard legislative process and the legacy of sharecropping in one family. It's an amazing and devastating book for how much it tries to do and how well it does it. The reporting and the writing are excellent, it never panders, preaches or sentimentalizes, preferring to let the details speak for themselves.
