The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology by Ray Kurzweil
I've been fascinated by the huge potential for technological change since first hearing about nanotechnology about 10 years ago. This book is both grand in scope and precise in detail in describing the promise and perils of technologies which which will be coming in the not so distant future.
The first chapter alone made buying this book a good investment. It was not only eye opening, but riveting, if not downright worrisome. Then, however, the book takes a turn into the examination of evidence in support of the claims offered up front. As convincing as the evidence is, I found that I have been becoming lost in the minutia, and still am only about half way through it despite having procured the book in early January.
Still, if claims that we could stretch our lifespans to over 1,000 years, speed our brain power to hundreds of times our current capacity, change the way we perceive the passage of time, communicate wirelessly through the tiny machines embedded in our brain cells, ...more
