First half very good. Steadily declines in quality. No pay off. Fowles didn't know where he was going with the mystery. Narcissistic and juvenile narrator. Started out as a solid 4 star, halfway through got 3, by the end was 2.5. Just not really worth it. Good airport novel I suppose if nothing else. Not really offensively sexist as much as just...obtusely sexist, if that makes sense. Weird racist paranoia about black men, classic trademark of the 60s novel ala One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, but distasteful to modern audience and v. dated. Peculiar type of obsession with psychoanalysis/Oedipal complex also v. 60s, v. dated. Someone in their review of it called it an "overblown men's book" and that's just about the perfect description. Not Literature.
