Ha!
This review is for all the people who ask me why I'm bothering reading a book that looks so bad. Because... sometimes they turn out to not be so horrible in the end.
I was at about page 80 in this book and ready to stop reading because it just seemed kind of... pointless. And I hated it. I hated Auden, and I hated her attitude, and I hated the book. It also really bugged me that the actual book was bright carnation pink. Can't tell you why, exactly, but it was getting on my nerves.
But... I can't tell you if it got better or if it just started growing on me. Auen seemed annoying at first, with her 'I-must-be-perfect'ness, but somehow that traight eventually became endearing. And I actually liked Eli; he was interesting, although didn't seem all tortured and tormented like the jacket cover wanted to make him out to be (which I was glad of. Enough with the controlling Edward Cullen type). The parents became understandable, if not quite likeable, and Auden's friends provided color, if they weren't strictly necessary.
And the idea of trying to give someone a life's worth of childhood experience in one summer (MINDBLOWING... I think not) is fun enough for the reader to be able to roll with it, and not try to dig too far into anything.
Overall, it was one of those light, fast reads that come off deeper than they really are for a reason we may never know. But that's okay.
