Hard Love

by Ellen Wittlinger
The book Hard love is about this 16 year old boy named John who is a very independant young man. His life was falling apart after his parent's divorce. He only gets to meet his father twice a week, but he didn't care if he did. He hated his father. His father abandoned him because he didn't have any freedom. John's mother wasn't good either. She lost affection towards him. All she cares about is her new boyfriend named Al. John's interest was the only thing that kept him happy. He enjoyed writing Zines. LAter, John encounters one of his favorite writers named Marisol. John and Marisol later had a deep connection to each other. But it wasn't love. It was a deeper meaning of friendship.
In my opinion, the book was ok for my taste. Even though Hard Love is one of my favorite genres (family problems), I didn't really admire the plot to it. In the book, the connection between friendship and love was really confusing. I didn't know if Marisol loved John as a friend or as a soulmate. Sometimes, I really hated John in this book because he acted very "emo" and selfish. But I don't blame him. He went through 6 years of struggle. If I would've rated this book, I would give it a 6 out of 10 because of it's plot.
