House of Suns

Words can't describe how much I love this book! The quality of the writing in the first chapter gripped me and wouldnt let me stop reading. It is a fabulous scifi space opera with fantastic characters you root for. The most impressive thing is the world building, and how the complex science becomes understandable and readable in a way that you don't normally find in these types of books.
Between discovering Reynolds and Banks, I feel like I'm in my own scifi novel Renaissance!

I have to agree... This is now among my favorite scifi books. So ambitious and so much breadth. Haven't read Banks quite yet; currently reading Peter F. Hamliton.

Just finished Judas Unchained and previously Pandora's Star by Peter F. Hamilton. I would greatly recommend. Moving on to his Void Trilogy, Reynolds after that for sure.
I have to say the House of Suns did not grip me as much as his earlier work does. To the extent that it, and his new novel Terminal World are both sitting half read on my shelves... and I can't really put my finger on what it is I disliked about them.
I'm also mad for this book. Unfortunately I haven't found another of his as good. Century Rain didn't do it for me at all - I'm hoping the Revelation Space series lives up to the promise this book suggested.
The Revelation Space trilogy is a hard slog, but it is well worth it. One of the best hard sci-fi stories I have read. If you like Epic scope then those three have it in spades.
I liked the Revelation Space series, but Ian is right, it can be a slog. I read Terminal World last year. I liked it but he wasn't playing to his strengths. It was kind of a Steampunkish, new weird mix. More Gene Wolfe than Alastair Reynolds.
Didn't like the Rev Space series, its plotting was convoluted and poorly paced. That said the world was deep and interesting and that's what kept me going.Others have mentioned Hamilton, he really is the gold standard in space opera right now. Night's Dawn is an incredible journey.
I love both Hamilton and Reynolds. Just finished Hamilton's "Pandora's Star" and went straight on to "Judas Unchained." I need to get back to Reynolds' "The Prefect" after that I think. Definitely my favourite SF authors at the moment. I also highly recommend Richard Morgan.
I love the Revelation Space series and really enjoy Reynolds as a writer. I have also been reading alot of Allen Steele.
Well, if you liked House of Suns try to get your hands on One Million A.D.. It contains a novella by Reynolds, "Thousandth Night", which is a very worthwhile prequel.
I just finished this book. The juxtaposition between Abagail with Palatial and what was happening in present time was just perfect.
Most of banks' SF revolves around "The Culture" sort of an intergalactic Nanny entity. I would recommend The Player of Games as a first because it gives a good intro into the milieu within which much of his works are set.
