Nothing quite compares to that first jolt, like a good cup of coffee in the morning, of reading Anne Lamott's book Traveling Mercies: Some Thoughts on Faith. Unfortunately this book doesn't deliver quite the same experience. Perhaps my expectations are too high. I found this collection of personal essays much less griping than her other "thoughts on faith" books. Maybe it was just my end of summer state of mind or that I don't relate to the parent-of-a-teen stage of life that Anne was writing about. I alternately liked and was disappointed with each essay but the last chapter was wonderful. Full of humor and honesty about how difficult it can be to follow Jesus, how our upbringing can mess with our minds, the importance of spiritual community and what grace really looks like. Come to think of it, all the chapters/essays had these elements but I guess I didn't identify with them as much. A definite read if you're an Anne Lamott fan but not my favorite.
