A great book to introduce WWI. Also works to expand beyond basic knowledge. I found the format very effective. The book begins with an intimate look at an individual, and tragically young, Canadian soldier. (One of the bonuses of this book is the focus on Canadian and Australian contributions to the war.)It then moves to the history behind the conflict. Then we meet some brass and get specific knowledge of key land and water battles. The focus continues to shift, which keeps the text fresh and gives a remarkably comprehensive accounting.
