The Road by Cormac McCarthy
I've been mildly fascinated with Cormac McCarthy ever since I found out he was the model for Owen Wilson's character Eli Cash in "The Royal Tenenbaums." I don't know if that portrayal rings true at all, but thinking of McCarthy as Eli Cash-- a man who bolsters his complete lack of self-confidence with ridiculous boldness-- seems plausible, especially if you think of the bold characters and scenarios of some McCarthy's some novels (i.e. what if the world burned to ash and every body died).
I don't mean to make fun the plot of the book, because I think it is completely consuming. I don't know if I've ever been so drawn in by a novel; I actually had to force myself to put it down because the never ending rawness and anxiety of the book was getting to me. And McCarthy shows that while he knows how setup a summer blockbuster-like premise, he can also hit the low notes, as small moments of tenderness, fragmented memories and brief but beautiful conversations overshadow the ...more
