Good, solid, enjoyable novels are blessedly common, but exceptional, knock-your-socks-off novels are rare. I count myself lucky if I stumble upon two or three a year. But now I've devoured two in one month, both by British writers I'd not read before.
Well, that was the review, but I found this anything but a "knock-your-socks-off" novel. Solid, yes. Enjoyable, yes. I don't think it was exceptional.

Interestingly, the time period for this book is roughly the same as the one I'm reading now, Wolf Hall. Granted WH is a Man Booker prize winner, but I'm already enjoying it so much more than Heartstone. That being said, I did rip through the book trying to figure out what was going to happen next. Just didn't blow me away. Perhaps I'm asking too much of a mystery.
