really liked it

Agatha Christie meets Bodice Ripper meets the Supernatural. This book makes me want to further investigate steam punk, and brown.

The heroine is not pretty (at least for Victorian England: she's too Italian and too independent and has a large nose) so I liked her instantly. She also can handle herself with the supernatural. She is also, herself, preternatural: she has no soul.

She is every bit of course the plucky heroine and I'm not going to bother with the plot here. Mysteries arise, new characters are introduced (her gay vampire best friend is awesome, by the bye), love (lust) is in the air, etc. etc. An eminently satisfying one-night read, and I'd like to see the next one.
