Elizabeth's review of The Prince of Tides
The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy
Forget the awful movie version (it tried hard, but I maintain that this book is essentially unfilmable in terms of attempting to truly do it justice). Forget that a summary of its plot would make it sound hopelessly maudlin and soap opera-esque. This is an extraordinary book. I remember going directly home from seeing the movie with my parents and digging out their copy, which I then read nearly without stopping and have reread a minimum of ten times since. I may have read better "literary" books since, but I've read very few with this one's level of sheer visceral power.
(Also, forget that since the movie came out in 1991, I would've been about ten when I read it. Forget what this makes you think of my parents, their parenting tactics, and the (lack) of supervision they exhibited towards my reading. After all, I turned out mostly okay, right?:).
