I just finished 1922 (the first of the four novellas). I liked this one a lot. Wilf James is at odds with the wife, and the simplest solution is to kill her. Things kind of go down hill from there. One of the things that impressed me about this story is the fact that it didn't sound at all like King's "voice". I wouldn't have thought he could surprise me after all this time.
The story is very compelling and you're drawn in from the start. And there's a good message that we can all take to heart - murder complicates things.
Big Driver - A semi-famous author reacts to her violent rape. This one was long, meandering, unoriginal and mostly pointless. Feel free to skip this one.
Fair Extension - A dying man gets a second chance. I love a protagonist who makes original choices.
A Good Marriage - A woman discovers that her husband may have a horrible secret. This is compelling. I thought it was going a little long, but the last sequence made it worth it, and even tied things up a little bit. Which was nice, because King doesn't always do that.

I loved A Good Marriage. That was my favorite. Fair Extension was my least favorite. I could not stand the main character. What a selfish, jealous POS. And it's not like Dr. Faustus where we get to see what horrible things happen to him for making such a deal. This nut just has to pay monthly for ruining a family.

POSSIBLE SPOILER POSSIBLE SPOILERTressa, he is definitely a POS. At the beginning I thought he was just an Average Joe who was thrust into a situation he neither comprehended nor truly wished for. When he turned out to be a POS who reveled in his friend's misery, it surprised me, and I always appreciate that.
Rusty, thanks for being considerate and putting the spoiler warning at the top. Just recently GR added spoiler html. Pretty nifty.Good points about that story. I also felt bad for this Joe Schmoe who couldn't catch a break. Or, actually he was doing better than most, but he just couldn't keep up with the Joneses. The old green-eyed monster reared its ugly head.
You know, I think it's my least favorite story in the bunch not because it's not interesting or well written, but because I hate that asshole! King sets us up like we're going to read a story about a modern-day Faustus, but in reality none of the usual bad stuff happens to the man who "sells" his soul to the devil.
I kept waiting for him to (view spoiler) But I am re-evaluating my initial reading of this story.
Thanks!
