** spoiler alert ** The story is about two friends - Kate and Tully who are very different but become best friends and remain so for decades. It starts off in the 1970's. There are boys, make-up, drugs, and angst. The book moves along to college. Then they move into their careers and family. There are affairs and betrayals and the friends become estranged. Then, tragically Kate finds out she has breast cancer and Tully comes back into the picture. I think this was a cop-out on many levels. First of all, I think Tully's betrayal deserved a kick to the curb. Secondly, I find a breast cancer death overdone in books. I have to say, for a "breast cancer" ending it was done as well as it can be, but I still felt it overshadowed the other themes in the book (friendship, mother/daughter relationships, betrayal.)
