I think half the reason this is such an effective book is its length -- you're completely immersed in the cold and the fear and the claustrophobia for 800 pages, so you can't help but feel it. But man -- for about the last quarter of the book I wanted to finish the damn thing and be done with it at least as much as those poor people wanted to get off that ice. However, the payoff at the end was good, so even though it got a bit bogged down in parts I enjoyed it all in all. Plus now my upper arms are toned from all that standing-up subway reading.

Lisa Going verrrrry slowly not because the plot drags -- it doesn't -- but because it's too damn big to carry on the subway.

Lynn I really liked the book, but it wasn't a consistent page-turner for me. There were just parts that went very slow for me...

Still, highly recommended. I loved it more for its description of the cold, than for the Monster.

Miriam I own this, but haven't read it yet. My husband read it last winter after PatD recommended it and he loved it. He did have to put it down for awhile because it was -40 out and there was just too much cold.
