I don´t think I would have chosen to read this book had I not been in LAX about to set off for 24 hours of flying without a solid novel in hand. This looked like the best I could find at the airport bookstore, and as it turned out I really enjoyed it.
The novel is written as the memoir of Will Cooper, a fictional self-made man living in the Southeastern US mountain frontier region during the 19th century. It is most compelling for its rich historical detail, from major events like the trail of tears and Cherokee displacement, down to the day to day lives of Scots-Irish immigrants and American Indians during the period. Cooper recounts his efforts to lead an honest and just life during a rugged time and place. He lives a passionate life, which is illustrated most prominently by his enduring devotion to an lifelong love, but also by his appreciation for the beauty and integrity of the land, and by his fine cooking even while camping in the backcountry.
