Scott's review of Ordinary Wolves: A Novel
Ordinary Wolves: A Novel by Seth Kantner
The first book I've ever read that captures and honestly explores the central, hopeless ironies of growing up, and struggling to live, in Alaska, both the bush and the city. If you believe the image of Alaska that the chambers of commerce push, or if you've ever asked the question, 'why shouldn't I kill myself this morning?', read it. This is the most honest literary fiction I've ever read to come from my home, and it doesn't even try to sell you a cruise package. Read it. The Arctic is dying even as I write this.
