This was my first Laura Lippman book and I suspect it wasn't the best one to hook me on her writing. This is a short novella (about 150 pages) which was originally printed in serialized format. It's a murder/missing person mystery....pretty straight forward stuff. It wasn't hard to figure out who the culprit was (by about page 70 or so) and while it wasn't bad writing, it was predictable. The novella wasn't long enough for me to connect with the protagonist/mystery solver or any of the characters for that matter.

I know Lippman writes longer novels featuring this heroine, Tess, and I suspect I just chose the wrong book to start with. Seems to me the novella was meant for readers who have been following Tess for some time and are already fans.

If anyone has any suggestions for a Lippman book I should start with, please feel free to chime in!
