So let me preface this by saying that the only reason I willingly read what looked like it could be mindlessly, fluffy trash was because 1) I'm so exhausted from all my "real reading" that I needed a break and 2) it was rated so highly on iBooks or whatever that I figured it wouldn't be a horrible waste of money to try out reading on my iPhone.
I am not going to knock romance novel enthusiasts, or writers for that matter. My mom loves this stuff, and often when we are vacationing we will trade books once we have finished reading them. Unfortunately, she winds up with my heavier material and I'm usually reading bad romance or mystery-suspense thrillers. Whatever.
My problem is that I really had no idea what I was about to read. I expected, perhaps foolishly, that a cheap romance novel not done by Harlequin and apparently written by three "famous" romance novelists would at least have bare essentials when it comes to writing. Such as understanding how to subtly use foreshadowing, and writing characters with more depth than a kiddie pool.
I don't know. I guessed correctly who was ending up with who by reading the back, and I honestly regretted wasting 7.99 within the first chapter. My fault. Then the bad Shakespeare epilogue? I don't even know. Jesus Christ, this gives me hope that if I ever fail at my chosen career, I can always write romance novels.
