This is one of the great Christian classics, as far as I'm concerned, and yet it is deeply skeptical of Christianity's ability to conform to a culture, to take root in any soil, to adopt the metaphor Endo brings up. But, the final scene is the most powerful image of Christ's love and forgiveness I have ever experienced in fiction.
