How the States Got Their Shapes
by Mark Stein
by Mark Stein
I got this book after watching the History Channel television program of the same name. Interestingly, there's some info that was on TV that wasn't in the book.
Informative and entertaining writing for a subject that could become downright mind numbing. Mark does a great service by using informative maps.
Although it may be a losing proposition of a monumental task, I would have preferred the book to be arranged a bit differently. Rather than list the states alphabetically, to make it easy to jump to the reader's favorite states, I think I would have preferred a regional or location based focus as it would have cut down some of the repetition...each state shares a border with at least 2 others. I grew tired of reading about the same conflicts over the same patch of ground that 4 states battled over because it had to be cataloged from each of the 4 states' viewpoints. I also got tired of having to jump ahead 150 pages to see the map of the area of which I was reading that was illustrated in another state later in the book.
Minor quibbles aside, good job, Mr. Stein.
