Okay, now I understand the brilliance of Alice Adams. I should have read this one first. She has a talent for writing really "unlikable" characters and whereas in her other books, it was hard to connect and care about them, in this book I actually did care and wanted to see how everyone's lives turned out. I really disliked every single character, but their stories were so fascinating, I had to get to the end. And really, it's somewhat of a happy ending. If you read just one of Alice Adams' book, this should be the one.
