It's 1918 and Dr. Jessica Layton stops by her hometown on the way to a research job in a Seattle hospital. She agrees to stay and temporarily help out as the town doctor until the actual contracted doctor arrives--at the same time the town is struck by the Spanish flu. Now she has to deal with the fact that her old lover is set to marry her sister, a new suitor in the form of the sycophantic town minister, and of course, a new and deadly plague. This is also the story of two people Jessica doesn't encounter -- a soldier in the trenches of France, and the town whore--but whose lives affect hers in unexpected ways. Harrington is generally perceived as a romance author and while there was a love story in here, it is really the story of a community under an epidemic during wartime. Very good.
