The Maze Runner is without a doubt the best book I've read all year. Ever notice how much harder it is to write a review for a book you absolutely adored than it is to write one for a story you loathed? I read The Maze Runner over three months ago but it's taken me this long to process it - along with the equally mind-blowing sequel The Scorch Trials - and try to dredge up the right words to express just how brilliant James Dashner's Maze Runner series is.

From the first sentence ("He began his new life standing up, surrounded by cold darkness and stale, dusty air.") I was hooked. The Maze Runner tells the story of Thomas, a teenage boy who finds himself trapped in the middle of a terrifying maze with a group of other boys who call themselves the "Gladers". Like the rest of the boys, the only thing Thomas can remember about his life before the Glade is his first name. Every day a select few of the boys run through the maze, trying to solve it and escape. Thomas is determined to become a Runner, but first he has to prove himself to the others...

I've seen The Maze Runner touted as a mix between The Hunger Games and Lord of the Flies and I agree - there's certainly a lot of similarities to be made. But I also loved how original this book felt - especially since there's a distinct lack of originality in YA fiction nowadays. Dashner's story felt fresh, and his characters so three-dimensional they seemed to bring the story to life. And I can't express enough how much I loved Dashner's writing. I can scarcely remember the last time I found a story so addictive, so engaging that I was able to forget about the real world and just dive right into the world created by the author. Only a very few of my favourite novels have affected me in this way and The Maze Runner is one of them.

I'm anxiously awaiting news of the UK release date for the third book. An absolute must-read series. 5 stars isn't nearly enough for this one!
