I have always been fascinated by the work of Abelardo Morell. Personally, I feel that he is greatest modern photographer. His works have the ability to transport the viewer to another world, reminding me of the works of Kafka, Beckett, and Dali.
I've lived in New York most of my life and yet through his lens, New York looks like something out of the myths and legends. So when I found out that he was doing a book with the text and drawings from the original Alice's Adventures in Wonderland I quickly sought it out. Morell recreates the story of Alice by combining photographs of the original drawings by Tenniel with Lewis Carroll's writing. The resulting images transport the viewer into the book, inventing a new landscape for the story. Alice walks on top of the pages, the rabbit runs through the text, the Mad Hatter sits on chairs twice as high as the book, etc. It's a wonderful reminder of how fun our childhood books can be and how new they can look through fresh eyes.
