I read KIM while traveling through India in January, 2008. It was a delight to be taken back in time while observing contemporary India. The gentle language of Kipling painted characters and landscape that has been a stereotype for me through the years. And yet, it didn't seem like that far away. One thing I liked about it was that it was a "guy's story". I read so much written by women, or about women who suffer so much pain, and this story doesn't include that. It was refreshing, and a book that I recommend to anyone who wishes to escape the cruelty so often found in contemporary writing.
