This is the second book by Jimmy Carter that I've read. In this book, Carter takes us back to his childhood and the way things were growing up during the Depression in rural Georgia. We get to read about his family history and life on the farm for both whites and blacks. Not being from Carter's generation, there were some things I didn't realize about that time period. I had no idea that strep throat was once a life-threatening illness! I have to say, the idea of growing and eating your own food really appealed to me. It's no wonder that Carter has such respect for the environment, having worked and lived off it for so long. I was disappointed that Carter failed to talk more about meeting and marrying his wife but because this was a book that focused mainly on his childhood and his parents/grandparents/siblings/family friends, the stories about him and Rosalynn just didn't fit. Perhaps he talks more about that in one of his other books.
