A good narrative about the years leading up to the American Revolution, including the first years, right through to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. So why they low score? Because none of the characters really emerge as distinct personalities. Look, Frankllin was a completely different personality from John Adams, who in turn was as unlike Franklin as he was unlike George Washington - and so on. And yet, Shaara's forays into the minds of these figures reveals essentially interchangeable thought patterns, approaches, concerns and methods. Sure, sure, they were men of a time who were united by a mission - but they were distinct individuals and that doesn't really come out in this narrative.
