I could have given this book a three-star rating, but I'm in a good mood. Why can't we have half stars?

Positives: The characters are appealing, as is the subject. I mean, who doesn't want to read about cake? I enjoyed the bit of fancy that wasn't too-too over the top. Same for the characterization of a small, Southern town, complete with magical bedroom wallpaper, giants, mysterious town leaders and ancient, doomed romance.

Negatives: I appreciate the tidying up of loose ends at the end of the novel, although it was, perhaps, just a bit too tidy. (Formula book anyone?) Also, I'm not a big fan of reading about romance among 16-year-olds. Ewwww.

All-in-all, a good read.
