Read in September, 2007

There were times I found this book hard going. One couldn't really sympathise with the main characters and there was an unfocussed atmosphere. The best bits, well-written and full of character and focus were those that dealt with the siege of Stalingrad and one feels that this was the real book which then got padded out.
